Brisbane Illustration Fair Art Zine Issue 3

Cover Artist Feature

I’m not much one for new years resolutions, but at the start of 2025 I set myself a goal that I would submit at least one piece of work to a publication, my first big step to start putting my art out into the world. I’d been to the Brisbane Illustration Fair in 2024 so the event was on my radar, and when I saw a post requesting submissions for their annual zine I knew this would be a perfect first submission.

Established in 2023, the Brisbane Illustration Fair (BIF) is a vibrant event celebrating the work of illustrators from Brisbane and the surrounding regions. It offers a dedicated platform for illustrators and artists to share, connect, and sell their work directly to the public.

The brief was for a piece of illustration work based on zine’s overarching theme.

“Theme Overview: Past, Present, Future ⏳
The past shapes our identities, the present demands engagement, and the future offers endless possibilities. Together, they guide us, connecting history, action, and potential into the unfolding story of life.”

And so this piece was born. I drew a cute witchy lady gazing into a crystal ball. At the time I was really pushing my illustrative capabilities, focusing on trying to capture the cartoony style I was developing and playing with light, shadow, and colour.

And to my absolutely delight - my piece, which I aptly titled ‘Crystal Ball’, was chosen to feature on the cover!

It was so exciting visiting the fair and seeing my piece in a printed publication, alongside so many talented artists whose works were on the pages inside. Truly an honour, and a ‘yes’ that I won’t soon forget.
